I had trouble with this one today. Not sure if my mind just was not on it or if I just couldn't really understand. The explanation was that it was kind of like a hostile takeover.
This psalm is a prayer of protection against those that are evil or that might cause harm. I know that these are personal feelings, but it seems that some of these psalms (like this one) are good prayers for the time we are in. It feels like the world is in a similar place as it was during the time of Joshua, Judges and some of the psalms that we are reading. These prayers feel like they would be good prayers for where we are now.

It does kind of sound like that. I also felt like God was punishing everyone in this passage. I have found myself looking up these towns to see if any of them still exist today. There are some areas that are on the map and I was also doing this when the people were going into the promised land.
This psalm sounds like they are asking the Lord to aid or help them in maintaining righteous behavior.
