There is a lot that happens in this reading today, but what really stands out is the parable about the sower. If we do not root ourselves in the Word of the Lord then that gives the enemy more of a chance to influence us and to pull us back out. Jesus explains to the disciples that everything is in parables so that those who have rooted and are listening will be able to see what the Word of God is trying to tell them.
We should be trying to understand the proverbs as they are instructions and wisdom that is being shared with us.

This is a powerful story. And I believe you are right in that we must root ourselves in the word of God in order to maintain that connection and understanding. It's interesting the parable explanation, as it makes it sound like they are only there to save those with the roots, verses aiding those without roots to grow roots. I don't know if that is really accurate, but that is how it reads. It seems like Jesus has to explain all these things to his disciples as they don't understand, so makes it seem like they do not have the roots. I might be reading that wrong.
The purpose of the Proverbs are to gain wisdom and instruction from the Lord.
