Day 109 - Deuteronomy 21-22 & Psalm 109

 Julie

Today's reading started out ok and the first chapter really asks for trust in God. Chapter 22 was hard to read or understand. I know that the times were different, but some of what was said was just really hard to wrap my head around today.

Psalm 109 is another lament that is asking for help from someone being treated unjustly.

Some of these laws I find interesting.  The first one is about atonement for an unsolved murder which gives instruction for it.  The next one is about marrying a captive woman which at the end it speaks of letting her go if you are not pleased with her, which I find strange.  The right of the firstborn makes sense.  Then the rebellious son comes next and they stoned people for alot of things back then.  Being a rebellious child  was a dangerous thing.  It went on to speak of returning lost things to their owner or holding them till the owner comes looking if they are not known.  This just seems to be a courtesy.  Marriage violations was interesting as well.  It does sound like at this point they are allowed to take many wives and there are some parts that talk of displeasure with the wife and what is allowed and not.  I'm not sure how to relate some of these things to life now.

The psalm sounds like he is asking God to oppose his accusers and for their curses to be brought back on them.  He is asking for God to protect him and bring him safely out of his situation.
