Day 124 - Joshua 8 & Psalm 124

 Julie

So I had to go to the Bible explanation for today's reading to try and understand the significance of the extensive explanation of this battle. In yesterday's reading, it talks about how they were defeated in Ai because they were not following God's law. However, the repented and those that were doing wrong were punished, and their return to Ai ended in them winning the battle. The explanation says that the reason for this story is to show that when you are following God's word and instruction there is more of a likelihood for success.

This psalm focuses on the fact that "Our help is in the name of the Lord." Had the Lord not been on the side of the Israelites they would have likely perished in many different ways. These are words that we should carry with us, especially when we are unsure of the outcome of situations that might be causing us trouble.

I can understand that explanation.  They did repent and move on to victory as God had told them.  What still gets me is that God is still having them kill everyone in these cities they are overtaking.  It seems wrong somehow.  I understand that God doesn't want them to be influenced by other cultures (?) or religions (?), and that they are very bad about straying at this point, but it still seems wrong.

The psalm does appear to be a reminder that without the lord they would have perished.
