Chapter 58 seems to be talking about how people are doing what is asked but then "doing as they please", which sounds like not following God's commands. It sounds like they are fasting and sacrificing, but their hearts aren't in it. They are just going thru the motions. I think at times we do this. Or alot of people do. We go to church, but then act opposite of what God would want. Our actions should reflect what is in our hearts, that is what I get from this first chapter. The second chapter is titled, "Sin, Confession, and Redemption". As I read, it seems there was alot about Sin and less about the other 2. Halfway thru it does say, "Our offenses are ever with us, and we acknowledge our iniquities", which I take to mean we admit to our transgressions and failure to keep our eyes on God. At the end it says the Redeemer will come to those who repent their sins. It does go on to say that God is always with us. "My spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants - from this time on and forever." It seems we need only call out to God.
This proverb seems to be speaking of heeding instruction and what happens when we don't. It also speaks of greediness, saying that if we trust in the Lord we will prosper. That we are not to try concealing our sins, as we will not prosper unless we confess in order to find mercy. We must open our hearts to God in order to be blessed.
