He is telling his audience to persevere through whatever trials they are facing and gives them reminders of past experiences. He says, "You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised". This is a verse we should hold on to for the times when we feel challenged or in difficulty.
This psalm seems to be a blessing on men to remain fearful and obedient to the Lord. This could relate to all that if we remain faithful, we will be blessed beyond measure. I think when people think of blessings, they think monetary riches or possessions. We forget that there are many ways to be rich or blessed.

It seems to also go in line with the other reading for today. And, yes, you are correct we do not consider what our true blessings are.
